sECOND LIFE

Picture
The intiation for these series was the discovery of a whole box of slides next to a street bin by the artist’s daughter on the way home from school.
Mother and daughter took the Box home; the daughter for organising the slides and Laura nitsche decided to invest in a slide projector after taking a glimpse at the pictures through the window.
She was immersed in the 60ies, visually taking part at vacations where camping chairs were pulled off the roof of the car, the radio, playing cards and white wine were placed on the table and the afternoon party in the shade could begin.

One can speak of a form of escapism, dealing with a collective sense of time from the 1960s that differs from our more solipsistic society.

One “misses” the ubiquituous mobile phone along with the kink in the cervical spine on the testimonials of that time.
Looking at the paintings You are in the best of company at the Heurigen (traditional wine bar at the outskirts of Vienna), at house balls, hunts, surrounded by impressive cars and tractors, people working together on projects (whether digging a pit or building a raised stand) - almost always smoking; the toddler still can fit on the other arm.

Not the voyeuristic view at the individual, but interest in the collective zeitgeist determine the basic tone here.
“Second life” has multiple meanings: the slides that would have otherwise been burned in the landfill were given a second life in a different medium– as a painting And Laura Nitsche was granted a second life while painting the pictures.

Coronah-distanz

This series started shortly after the lockdown in spring 2020. It is based on a performance by two artists who - with coordinated rules - moved in a room. There were various challenges: they were pulled to the opposite corners of the room by means of an elastic band - they had long sticks to keep their distance, lengths of fabric, scissors, etc. and played with approaching and turning away.

Humans are social beings and the attraction between people is accordingly great.
In this performance  a natural "Dance" developed in accordance with the circumstances.
Laura Nitsche later on painted, cut out, stuffed and sewed theses soft sculptures in order to create tactile sculptures in mostly contact-free times.

The photo wallpapers on which the sculptures were sewn with metal wire are an Allusion to the "New times" of the zoom conferences and the attempt to preserve some of the privacy by means of (otherwise digital) picture backgrounds.

Shopping Lists - Still Lifes - Life Styles

years ago Laura Nitsche started collecting shopping lists from public spaces;
streets, shopping carts, parking spaces  - Yes, that was me searching the trash can for shopping lists in front of the super market...

I then made a composition of the items on the list and painted them in an old masters way.
Here is a selection of my collection:

- I Chose The Interpretation Of Post Card And Map:

Garbage still lifes

I started painting the first still life series in summer and autumn, when many of the items grew in my garden.
AS winter came I had to buy more things from the shop and had more and more garbage left over from the still lifes
so the next step was to paint those garbage still lifes too...

Prunkstillleben (pompous still lifes)

These are bigger formats and more luxurious shopping lists.
you will also find fruits and vegetables which are from different seasons
and therefore are imported from other countries and continents which I usually try to avoid

The arrangement is very strict here so you will find the lemon net at the same spot where the lemon is on the other picture ...

Matrjoschkas - Family patterns

Donauruderwanderung 2012

Rowing trip on the Danube 2012

In summer 2012, several rowing teams undertook a rowing voyage from Orth / Donau with the aim of reaching the Black Sea.
I was part of the following two stages: Mohacs (Hungary) until Backa Palanca (Serbia) and then in Rumania Turnu Severin until Calafat.
It was an incredibly beautiful journey of a different kind. For me, especially the human encounters were interesting.
At the summer academy in Traunkirchen in the class of  Xenia Hausner I started to painting oil pictures of this trip.
You can see the paintings in my solo exhibition from May 24th til August 14th 2013 in castle Orth/Donau.
